GST for Small Resellers in India: A Simple Guide
GST scares most first-time resellers, but the rules are simpler than they look. Here's a plain-English guide to registration limits, invoices and filing so you can sell on Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho without stress.
Do You Even Need GST Registration?
The biggest myth among new resellers is that everyone needs a GST number from day one. For most goods, registration only becomes mandatory once your annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in a few special-category states). If you sell only offline within your own state and stay below that limit, you can legally operate without GST.
There is one big exception that catches people out: if you want to sell on Amazon.in, Flipkart or any marketplace that collects TCS, you almost always need a GSTIN regardless of turnover. Meesho is the friendly outlier — it now allows non-GST sellers in many categories, which is why so many home-based resellers start there.
Registration: Faster and Cheaper Than You Think
GST registration is free on the government portal and usually approved within 3-7 working days. You do not need a CA to apply, though many first-timers pay ₹500-1,500 to an online service just to avoid errors.
Keep these ready before you start: PAN card, Aadhaar, a cancelled cheque or bank statement, a passport photo, and proof of your business address (electricity bill plus a rent agreement or NOC if rented).
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor
- Bank proof (cancelled cheque or statement)
- Business address proof + rent agreement/NOC
- Passport-size photograph
Input Tax Credit: Where You Actually Save
This is the part worth understanding. When you buy stock from a GST-registered wholesaler, the GST you pay on that purchase becomes Input Tax Credit (ITC). You subtract it from the GST you collect on sales, so you only pay the difference to the government.
Example: you buy a phone stand for ₹100 + 18% GST (₹18). You sell it for ₹150 + 18% GST (₹27). You owe the government only ₹27 minus your ₹18 credit = ₹9. Without a proper GST bill from your supplier, you lose that ₹18 credit entirely. This is exactly why buying from registered wholesalers like Stuff Bazar, who issue proper tax invoices, protects your margin.
Filing: The Monthly Routine
Once registered, filing becomes a habit rather than a headache. Most small sellers file GSTR-1 (your sales) and GSTR-3B (your summary and tax payment). Many can opt for the QRMP scheme and file quarterly while paying tax monthly, which cuts the paperwork a lot.
The Composition Scheme is another option for turnover up to ₹1.5 crore — you pay a flat low rate (often 1% for traders) but you cannot claim ITC or sell across state lines through marketplaces. It suits simple local shops, not ambitious online resellers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The costliest errors are boring ones: missing filing deadlines (late fee is ₹50 per day), charging the wrong GST rate, and not reconciling ITC. Set a phone reminder for the 11th and 20th of each month and you have solved most of it.
Charge GST at the rate for your product category — 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% — not a rate you assume. When unsure, check the HSN code of the item; your wholesaler's invoice will usually list it for you.
FAQ
Can I sell on Meesho without GST?
+
Yes, in most categories Meesho now allows sellers without a GSTIN, which makes it the easiest starting point for home resellers. Amazon and Flipkart, however, generally require a GST number.
What happens if I don't register but cross the turnover limit?
+
You become liable for the GST you should have collected plus interest and penalties. Once your sales approach ₹40 lakh, register promptly to stay safe.
Do I need a CA to file GST returns?
+
No. Simple trader returns can be filed yourself on the GST portal or through affordable apps for a few hundred rupees a month. A CA becomes worthwhile only as your volume and complexity grow.
