How to Price Products for Maximum Reselling Profit
Pricing is where resellers win or lose money. This guide shows you how to calculate every hidden cost, set a profitable price, and stay competitive on Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho.
Start With Your True Cost, Not Just the Buy Price
Most beginners price on the buy price alone — a mistake that quietly eats profit. Your real cost per unit includes shipping in, packing, marketplace fees, payment charges and returns.
Add every rupee before you decide a selling price. A ₹250 kurti can easily carry ₹120 of extra costs once you count courier, packaging and platform commission.
- Product buy price (e.g. ₹250)
- Inbound shipping / courier per unit
- Packaging material (₹8–20)
- Marketplace commission (Meesho, Flipkart, Amazon: 5–25%)
- Payment gateway / COD charges
- Return and RTO allowance
Pick a Pricing Method
Two simple methods work for most resellers. Keystone pricing doubles your total cost — quick and safe. Margin-based pricing works backwards from the profit percentage you want.
For fashion and accessories, a 2x–3x markup on total cost is common. For electronics and commodities where buyers compare fast, margins are tighter at 15–30%.
- Keystone: total cost × 2 = selling price
- Margin target: selling price = cost ÷ (1 − desired margin %)
- Competitive: match the market, then trim cost to protect margin
Worked Example
Take that kurti. Buy price ₹250, plus ₹30 inbound shipping, ₹15 packing, and a 15% Meesho commission. If you sell at ₹599, commission is about ₹90, leaving a total cost of roughly ₹385.
Your profit is ₹599 − ₹385 = ₹214 per piece, a healthy 36% margin. If returns run at 1 in 10, set aside about ₹40 per sale to cover RTO — you still clear around ₹174. That is a price worth building on.
Stay Competitive Without a Price War
You rarely need to be the cheapest — you need to be the best value. Bundle products, offer faster dispatch, or add better photos and a small freebie to justify a slightly higher price.
Watch competitor prices on Amazon.in and Flipkart, but do not blindly undercut. A race to the bottom kills margins for everyone. Instead, lower your buy cost by sourcing directly from wholesalers so you can price competitively and still profit.
Review and Adjust Regularly
Pricing is not set-and-forget. Courier rates, GST and platform fees change, and so does demand. Review your bestsellers monthly and your full catalogue every quarter.
Use festive seasons like Diwali and wedding months to raise prices slightly when demand spikes, and run clearance pricing to move slow stock before it becomes dead capital.
FAQ
What profit margin should I aim for as a reseller?
+
It varies by category. Fashion and accessories can support 30–50% after costs, while electronics and commodities often run at 15–25%. Always calculate after every fee, not just the buy price.
Should I include GST in my selling price?
+
If you're GST-registered, your displayed price should be inclusive so buyers see the final amount. Factor the tax into your margin calculation so you don't lose money on it.
How do I compete when others sell cheaper?
+
Compete on value, not just price. Better photos, faster shipping, bundles and reliable service let you hold a slightly higher price. Lowering your buy cost through direct wholesale sourcing also widens your room to compete.
