What is MOQ? Minimum Order Quantity Explained for Buyers
MOQ, or Minimum Order Quantity, decides how much you must buy in one go from a wholesaler. Here is what it means, why suppliers set it, and how Indian resellers can work around a high MOQ.
What Does MOQ Actually Mean?
MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of units a supplier will sell you in a single order. If a wholesaler lists kurtis at a 12-piece MOQ, you cannot buy just one or two; you commit to at least a dozen.
MOQ can be set per design, per colour, or per total order value. A Surat textile supplier might say '50 metres minimum per fabric' while an electronics importer might say 'minimum order ₹10,000'. Always ask which type applies before you assume.
- Per-unit MOQ: e.g. minimum 12 pieces per design
- Per-colour MOQ: e.g. 6 pieces of each colour in a set
- Order-value MOQ: e.g. ₹5,000 minimum bill regardless of quantity
Why Do Suppliers Set an MOQ at All?
Wholesale margins are thin — a supplier may earn only ₹15–40 per piece. Packing, billing, GST paperwork and courier booking cost the same whether they ship 2 pieces or 200. An MOQ makes each order worth the effort.
Manufacturing and import also work in batches. A factory dyes fabric in rolls and an importer books a container by the carton, not the single item. The MOQ simply passes that batch logic down to you.
Typical MOQs Indian Resellers Will See
There is no single national rule, but patterns repeat across categories. Knowing the rough band helps you spot a genuinely low-MOQ deal versus an inflated one.
Remember these are starting points. Newer suppliers and those courting small resellers often keep MOQs low to win repeat buyers.
- Readymade garments: 6–12 pieces per design
- Imitation jewellery: 12–24 pieces per style
- Fabric by metre: 20–50 metres per colour
- Home and kitchen imports: 1 carton (often 24–48 units)
- Mobile accessories: 25–100 pieces per model
How to Handle a High MOQ
A high MOQ is not always a wall. If the number scares you, negotiate — many suppliers will drop it 20–30% for a serious first buyer, especially over WhatsApp where the conversation is direct.
You can also split an order with another reseller, start with the supplier's bestselling design only, or look for suppliers who deliberately serve small buyers. Stuff Bazar, for example, keeps low MOQs so Surat-sourced products stay reachable for students and first-time resellers who cannot lock up capital in 200 pieces.
- Negotiate politely — offer to pay in advance for a lower MOQ
- Pool the order with a friend or fellow reseller
- Buy only the proven bestseller first, then expand
- Choose suppliers who advertise low or no MOQ
MOQ vs Your Real Buying Power
Before agreeing to any MOQ, do the simple maths: MOQ × cost price = money locked in stock. Twelve kurtis at ₹250 is ₹3,000 out of your pocket before a single sale. Make sure you can sell that stock within 30–45 days.
A low MOQ protects your cash flow and lets you test demand on platforms like Meesho, Flipkart or Instagram before scaling. As a reseller, staying liquid usually beats chasing the lowest per-piece price on a huge order.
FAQ
Is a lower MOQ always better?
+
For beginners, yes — it keeps your cash free and lets you test what sells. Once a product proves itself, a higher MOQ usually earns you a better per-piece rate.
Can I ask a wholesaler to reduce the MOQ?
+
Absolutely. Many Surat and online suppliers will lower the MOQ for a genuine buyer, especially if you pay upfront or commit to reorder. A polite WhatsApp message often works.
Does MOQ include GST?
+
MOQ is about quantity or order value; GST is added on top of the bill. If a supplier quotes a ₹5,000 minimum, confirm whether that figure is before or after 5–18% GST.
